After weeks of searching, I was able to track down the double Phantom soundtrack cd. And what a relief it was. It's odd, though. There is quite a bit of dialogue on the cd, kind of like a radio version of the play (Don't they still do that on BBC radio in England? I think they do. I'd love that job).
I received an email from Seb the other day, with the following news (courtesy of "Variety"):
A 'DREAM' COME TRUE FOR CONDON B'way musical gets a Hollywood makeover
Bill Condon will direct the movie version of "Dreamgirls," the thinly veiled story of the rise of Diana Ross and the Supremes during the formative years of Motown Records.
All right, first things first. It still doesn't mean it's going to happen. Even if it does, we are looking at at least two years before this thing is gonna hit the screen. So much could be fucked up here and yet ...
Holy fucking shit. To those who run in my circle (and I think this circle consists of me and Shania, so it's more of line, albeit a small one) this is fucking huge. Dreamgirls, as you may or may not know, is my hands down favorite musical. Shania and I and T-Love once made a thirty hour trip (there and back) to Atlanta to see Jennifer Holliday recreate the role of Effie Melody White. I love this show, and I have always hoped to see it made into a film. Granted, I wanted to direct it, but still, Condon is no slouch here, and he proved with his Chicago screenplay that he knows how to respect the work on which his script is based. With my early sleuthing telling me that Rent on film is gonna be a big of piece of shit, this is the news I have been hoping to hear.
Now I just have to figure out how to be in this movie.
